Notice Purpose: To seek public comment on a draft permit from the Department of Environmental Quality that will allow the release of treated tunnel wash wastewater and stormwater into a waterbody in Newport News, Virginia.

Project Description: The Virginia Department of Transportation has applied for a reissuance of a permit for the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel. The applicant proposes to release treated tunnel wash wastewater and stormwater into the James River in Newport News in the Lower James River watershed. The solids will be disposed at Clearfield MMG. A watershed is the land area drained by a river and its incoming streams. The permit will limit the following pollutants to amounts that protect water quality: physical and chemical properties, solids, metals and inorganics.
