Notice Purpose: To seek public comment on a draft permit from the Department of Environmental Quality that would allow impacts to wetlands and stream channels in Botetourt County, Virginia

Public comment period: November 4 – December 5, 2024.

Applicant: Roanoke Cement Company, LLC; 188 Summerfield Court, Suite 101, Roanoke, VA  24019;

Project Description: The applicant has applied for a new permit for the Roanoke Cement Company - Catawba Quarry Expansion project. The project is located at 6071 Catawba Road in Botetourt County, Virginia. The proposed activity is to extend quarry operations into an adjoining parcel of land. The proposed activity would affect 0.33 acre(s) of wetlands and 2762 linear feet of stream channel. The proposed activity would affect Catawba Creek and unnamed tributaries in the Catawba Creek watershed.  To compensate for the surface waters affected, the applicant would purchase 0.41 wetland mitigation credit(s) and 2333 USM stream mitigation credits. DEQ’s tentative decision is to issue the permit.
