Precipitation causes runoff at industrial facilities that delivers pollutants to storm sewers and water bodies. DEQ regulates several types of industrial activities to reduce and mitigate the impacts of their stormwater runoff.

The industrial permits cover stormwater discharge that is directly related to manufacturing, processing, or raw materials storage areas at an industrial plant. Most industrial facilities obtain coverage under the statewide general permit. The general permit is adopted every five years by the State Water Control Board. In addition, DEQ issues individual permits for certain activities.

Regardless of the permit type, all covered industrial facilities must develop and implement a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).
