State Environmental Impact Reports

The Code of Virginia requires state agencies to prepare and submit an environmental impact report (EIR) for each major state project. DEQ develops procedures governing the preparation and evaluation of required EIRs for state projects. To facilitate this process, the agency has created and distributed the Environmental Impact Review of Major State Facilities procedures manual.

Department of Aviation Reviews

DEQ coordinates environmental documents associated with airport projects subject to licensing by the Department of Aviation. For these projects, DEQ releases a public notice and conducts a public hearing.

State Corporation Commission Reviews

DEQ coordinates environmental reports associated with electric power generating projects and power line projects requiring State Corporation Commission (SCC) licensing. The SCC has developed regulations detailing what information is needed in the environmental report.

Environmental Impact Assessments for Drilling in Tidewater

A permit by the Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy (DMME) is required to drill in Tidewater. As part of that application, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The content requirements for an EIA are found in the regulations. DEQ coordinates EIAs with state agencies and provides a report to DMME.
