Every year, DEQ publishes an annual summary recycling report that provides details on recycling conducted by each solid waste planning unit along with a state recycling rate calculation based on the data provided by these planning units.

The calendar year 2022 Virginia Recycling Rate Report established a recycling rate for Virginia of 43.1 percent, which included credits for solid waste reused, non-MSW recycled, recycling residues, and source reduction programs. This rate was based on the data submitted by all 19 SWPUs required to report for 2022. Most of the highest recycling rates historically were experienced by programs in the urban areas of Virginia.
